
Sapiens Health Foundation an NGO based in Chennai celebrated the World Salt Awareness week 2026 at a function held on 13th May 2026.
The special event was held at the Indian Overseas Bank central office, Chennai.
Mr. Ajay Kumar Srivastava, MD and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank was the Chief Guest. He released the booklets on salt reduction guide in 3 different languages namely English, Hindi and Tamil. An awareness video based on the salt reduction guide was also released.
The simple guide highlights the average salt consumed by Indians and the tips to reduce salt while cooking, while shopping and eating in restaurants. Dr Rajan Ravichandran, Chairman, Sapiens Health Foundation, highlighted the theme with a presentation to the staff at IOB. He shared that according to WHO, the target of reducing salt by 30% has not been achieved globally. About 92 countries have implemented some form of legislation and working towards the reduction target. It’s high time that India too implements mandatory food labelling of sodium and reduction of salt in mass food procurement areas. Dr Rajan Ravichadran appealed to the audience to use low sodium salt substitute for cooking.
